What if I'm claustrophobic or afraid of the dark?

These are natural concerns.  Most people find that the space within the tank feels limitless.  Remember, you are always in full control of your experience.  You may float with the light on, leave the door open and exit the tank whenever you wish.

Is the water clean?

Very clean!  Eight hundred pounds of Epsom salt, a natural sterilizing agent, is dissolved into only ten inches of water.  (It is far saltier than the Dead Sea.)  The entire volume of water is filtered three times between float sessions.  We maintain a consistent level of 100 ppm of hydrogen peroxide.  Don't worry.  It won't bleach your hair, but it does keep the water absolutely clean and safe.  Every client is required to shower on site before entering the tank.

Can I drown?

No. The solution is only 10 inches deep and is so dense that everyone floats effortlessly!  You can safely sleep in the tank.  We provide a neck pillow for those who like the additional support.

Do I wear a bathing suit?

We highly recommend floating in the buff.  The feeling of a suit against your skin can be a distraction.

Will I get water in my ears?

You may choose to use foam or silicone earplugs, which we supply. Salt water is not harmful, but if you get some in your ears you may wish to rinse them in the shower after your float. To remove any moisture which lingers after your shower, please use the rubbing alcohol provided. Simply tilt your head to one side, fill the ear canal with alcohol, tilt your head the other way and let the liquid run out. The dense alcohol will float the water to its surface so that it pours right out. Any remaining alcohol will evaporate almost immediately. Repeat with the other ear if needed.

How long should I float?

You are in control of the length of your session.  We offer 90-minute sessions, but you may end the session whenever you want by getting out of the tank.  Many people report that it takes about 30 minutes for their bodies to settle down and for their brains to enter "theta state".  Our record float was 12 hours long!

What if I am sick the day of my float?

Please give us a call and we will reschedule your session for when you are feeling better.

 Can I float when menstruating?

Yes.  Please wear a tampon.

What is the history of floatation therapy?

Floatation therapy is not a new concept.  It has been practice for more than half a century, and has proven to be an effective tool for physical and mental well-being.  It is recognized and prescribed by the medical community in many European countries, and is available throughout the United States.  The float tank was invented in 1952 by neuroscientist and author John Lilly who was investigating the nature of human consciousness.  Lilly sought to create an environment in which a person was removed not only from all sensory input, but from the pull of gravity itself.  The commercial float tank was developed by Lilly and Glenn Perry in 1972 and has been in continuous use ever since.  Our center houses this time-tested model, the Samadhi Classic.   For more information on the history of floating, visit  http://www.samadhitank.com/history.html.
